Hello Everyone,

I just received a job offer at the VA Hospital there. I've never been and I am a little nervous. We are a mixed couple, German & African American, planning to relocate to Milwaukee from Philadelphia. We have 2 children, 7th grade & 3rd grade. I've read some of the older post on interracial couples but a lot of them were outdated. Can anyone suggest a nice neighborhood that offers great schools, diversity, and not to far from the hospital?

I think Wauwatosa is going to be your best bet. It's close to the VA, is a desirable community to live in yet still mostly affordable, has above average schools, relatively low crime, and is pretty diverse so being interracial wouldn't be an issue. Specifically, I would look near "the village" in and around State St (close to 70th Street). There are decent neighborhoods just south and north of there. I would also look around North Ave. west of 76th St. and Wisconsin Ave between Hawley and 68th St. You'd be within a 10-15 minute drive or less from any of these locations.

West Allis is closer, but much of it is more working class and it's less diverse than Tosa. Picture bars on almost every street corner and random heavy industrial buildings. The west side of town (west of Hwy 100) is much less like that, so that might be an option for you as well.

Otherwise, if you want to go a bit further west check out New Berlin. It's much more suburban than Tosa. NB is mostly 50-60s ranch style homes while Tosa is going to be more two story brick homes from the 20s-40s. NB schools are good, taxes are relatively low, has very little crime, and would still be an easy drive for you (just shoot down National Ave). Not very diverse though.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Congrats and good luck!
