Just curious: what is the UP Michigan growing season like? What sorts of gardening/plants work well there? I know it's a short season... but how short?

I'm sure it varies by region. I'm most interested in western UP, perhaps around Ironwood, Iron River, Menominee, or even Hancock...

Here is the U.P. farm directory put out by the Marquette Food Co-op
http://www.marquettefood.coop/cms_files/Directoryrev52809onlinesorted.pdf (broken link)

If that link doesn't work, type in Marquette co-op into your favorite search engine. Click the "Think Local First" tab on the right and then click on the U.P. Farm directory.

As you'll see, while we do have a short growing season.... there is a large variety of goodies that can still be grown here. Especially if you make use of row covers, green houses, and cold frames.
