Can anyone give me any insight as to where would be the best place to camp? Thinking of going in early June. We would like to still be close to the Island but not in touristville.

Wilderness State Park, about 11 miles west of Mackinaw City.

There are a few more state campgrounds in the area.

Michigan Park and Trail Map
I'll second Wilderness State Park. It is the first one to pop into my head when I read the OP.

We stayed in a park that is just outside the city in the LP where the ferries dock. I cannot recall the name of the City nor of the campground, but it was very nice. Right on the water, decent sized lots and not crowded at all. I do not remember the time of year that we went, but it was cool so it must have been spring or fall.

would that be the "tee-Pee" campground in Mackinaw City? I think that one is close to the ferry docks.

We stayed at Castle Rock campground last year. We got a spot near the water and could see the island from our campsite. Not to close, and not too far from St. Ignus. Also right across from Castle Rock. We really liked it. It was nice and quiet also.

There is also Mackinac Mill Creek campground, just before the bridge.

Wilderness is awesome! Last year I got a campsite right on Lake Michigan. I woke up to the waves. And driving in to the park the road is lined with dense stands of cedar trees. I felt like I was truly in the wilderness! But it's a modern campground too, so no need to worry about that.

Have fun! I LOVE the straits, as my screen name clearly shows

Wilderness is in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful but far from anything. Try the Mill Creek State Park inbetween Cheboygan and MC.

LakerGirl, I know of quite a few spots that are great for camping in the area, but they are not true camp grounds. Are showers and such a requirement?

If not, let me know, and I'll tell you where. One is just about right in St. Ignace, another is just a couple, I mean within 5, miles from Mac City. I have a list of others too.

I should also say, all these are on lakes, and one is on lake MI.
