My son was accepted to MTU PhD program. He and his wife are looking for clean, inexpensive, unfurnished rental. They are a tidy, quiet couple with no kids, no pets and an excellent credit rating.

Can someone provide leads? They visited this past weekend and said people laughed at them when they asked about rentals beginning summer 2009. Guess rentals are hard to come by up there--booked through summer 2010? Really?! Oh my!

I've only been to Houghton once about a year ago, so I'm not knowledgable, but I did a quick search and found this link, maybe it will help:
Allans Realty - Apartment Rental (http://www.allansrealty.com/RealEstateListings/ApartmentRental/tabid/55/language/en-US/Default.aspx - broken link)

Default You can try the local paper

it's the Daily Mining Gazette (online) and there is also craigslist for Michigan, under "yoopers".

Rentals are more plentiful than you've been told - most of my family lives there - it's just that it's more of a "drive around, see a sign, knock on door or call" kind of process...you know, before the internet There just aren't tons of people that make advertising worth it; rent is very reasonable in most cases.

The school may have some other help also, I would imagine.

I've seen houses for rent, as well, in the paper. Best of luck in your search

Thanks so much. I've passed this info (the real estate link and the Craigslist info) onto my son. I think he checked Craigslist, but he looked under "Michigan" and of course found nothing. Methinks he needs to refine his search and use the "proper" terms for the area!

When I was a student at MTU, the school had a website that people used to advertise off-campus rentals. I suggest checking with MTU.

Don't worry -- if they have no pets and no kids, finding a place to live won't be difficult. But they might want to consider buying, if they have enough money for a downpayment. They're going to be there for a while, and there are lots of inexpensive houses up there.
