Hi-

So, not to be a complete idiot, but I'm coming from Colorado and wonder, what is TWP- I know what it stands for- but what does it mean? Is it a newer spin off of the town or an older part or? Generally speaking, is it a better or worse part of town?

Thanks for your help in advance!

TWP usually stands for "township" It doesn't signify the type of properties, just a physical designation on a PLAT map for identifying property location. All land in Michigan is in a township regardless if it is in downtown Detroit or the middle of the woods in the UP and has a population of 0.

Michigan as a state is broken up into 83 counties. Each county is then subdivided into townships. The number of townships varies by county, usually around 10 - 12 depending on size. Within twps, you will have cities and villages, these are separate entities, and sometimes exist across twp lines. It's really just another way of subdividing local govts.
