My kids' school is canceling school Friday and half of today because the high school girls (the high school is over 15 minutes away) basketball team are playing in state finals down in Detroit. IMO this is crazy! Is this typical? I know it's not every day that a small, make that tiny, school goes to state, but hello..... it snows 8 inches and is 10 below and they still have school, they even have school on MLK day, but then they call off 1 1/2 days of school with no warning so that people can drive down to Detroit to see the game? What's up with that?

Wow. That's absurd. I could see at most a half day...? I don't even understand that. But a day and a half?

Is the half day before the game and the full day after the game?

Stupid. But, I went to a school constantly competing in state championships so I am not familiar with the culture of small town schools.

If they haven't used their compliment of snow days, I think it's a great idea!

Well, the problem with that is there are households where parents work and can't just "not go into work" at the drop of a hat.

I think it's crazy and irresponsible. And what's worse, if you complain, they're going to label you as being an enemy of the girl's basketball team.

What they should have done is had school, but for those who wish to go to the game, give them an opportunity to make up the work (don't penalize them). And if I were a teacher, I'd say: If you go to the game, make sure to bring your ticket stub in on Monday.

The snow and cold are normal. (I don't remember school ever being cancelled for snow/cold when I was in school)

This is big day for a small school. Your players need support in the stands.

Many people knew of the game. (don't you keep up with what is happening at your local schools!)

Problem would be solved if they put Boy's and Girl's sports on the same schedule.......then you'd be in Ypsi in November instead of March.

Of course I keep up with the school. I'm excited too, but to cancel with no warning is hard. I agree that left over snow days may have something to do with it.

I also know that the school has gone to state finals in academic areas and school wasn't canceled for that. Field trips for ALL students have been cut drastically due to not enough money for busing, yet sport teams still get bus rides all over the place.

It just seems that priorities are a bit out of place.

Can most people call in to work and say they won't show up due to a basketball game? NO! Well, I don't know, maybe in Michigan you can, but not many other places....

For what it's worth, I know when I went to high school in Nevada in the early '90's (wow, was it that long ago? lol), students were allowed to go to the state tournament games, but those who did not go still attended classes. Like what magellan had suggested. Personally, I think that is the best solution - you should allow those who want to support their school's team to do so, but you should not have the entire school take the day off. Or, at the very least, give more notice than appeared to be the case here.
