Michigan Labor Market Information, Mi Fast Facts, warn1

This is the link to to WARN list, alerting readers to where mass layoffs are going to be occurring. It can at least tell you where NOT to bother applying.

It's missing Visteon's 11/15/2007 downsizing. That's when I was let go. Is the list blue collar only?

FYI: Diversified Distribution Services listed on there in 2008 is moving their Detroit operations to Grand Rapids, so they aren't necessarily a bad place to apply.

It looks to encompass all types of workers, although the numbers are quite amazing.........that is a lot of individuals out of work in such a short amount of time.

It does seem like a lot. 2008 is already worse than 2006.

Those aren't necessarily the number of people laid off. It's a listing of anticipated layoffs that large companies have to disclose to the state. If you click on 2007 for instance, the original number was 22,000 anticipated layoffs for 2007. Then you click on 2008, it shows the 2007 number as coming to about 13,000 total layoffs (9000 less than estimated). So far in 2008, the anticipated number is about at the halfway point of the 2007 final number, so it may even come in lower than 2007. GM's plants in Pontiac and Flint account for 1/3 of the number.

The 2001 total was about 19,000. 2006 looks like a low point.

I happen to know several individuals who had worked at two of the places listed, and they are out of work, although these were permanent closures.

If they're including the closure of places like the Children's Home of Detroit (I saw it on one of the lists), that would encompass white-collar professionals like social workers and administrators.
