Guess I should update you on what's been happening with job interviews - or should I say the lack of job interviews. I had received 3 inquiries out of the blue regarding my resume on monster.com. They all involved a real nice HR person getting me scheduled to do a phone interview with a department manager of some sort.

Then came the phone interview and the person on the other end seemed very optimistic about hiring me - then nothing. Or, rather, an e-mail from the nice HR person telling me they were sorry but that they had decided to hire someone local; or we're started a strategic planning initiative (I liked that one - it was original) and that they could do no hiring in the immediate future but to call back and see how things were from time to time. I have, or rather I did. And no returned calls, no returned e-mails - nothing.

So, this is how they are doing business in Michigan now, eh? Just because I'm living in New Mexico now doesn't mean I'm damaged goods!

I'm just confused, dis-illusioned, and a bit mad, but I'll get over it...

Yep -- that sounds about right. And I see a lot of contracting of work rather than hiring full time employees. There are usually dozens of local people applying for each job so unless you have some skill that nobody else in the area does -- you'll have a hard time getting a job over somebody local.

I'm moving to NM at the end of next week and most people I know consider me lucky to be getting out of this state. I think you should just visit MI and get over that homesickness. It's about the best time of the year here now -- if you really want to get over MI -- visit in January/February and then be glad you live in NM.

I've been unemployed for six months here (so far). Now is not a time to come back to Michigan - and I LOVE Michigan. If you're set on moving back to the midwest, try Chicago for a while until the economy improves...if it ever does.

Or try the West side of the state. Just moved back home to the West side and in the last week have been offered 2 jobs other than the one I have lined up already, both of which came unsolicited. Wife has her pick as well, so she chose the best one and is quite happy where she ended up as well. It all depends on what job skills you offer and where you look. That holds true just about anyplace right now from what I have seen, and not just in Michigan.

So.......So glad I left West Michigan. Tried it for 6 years , I guess I did not fit. Can't explain it , but the area was just too much in the middle, a bit too rural for me , for one. If I were a fruit farmer , I am sure I would like it there. If I were a Dutchman , I am sure I would like it there. Great Electric rates ( nuke plants everywhere) , but all other costs were high , for a like kind area in many other states.
I will miss the fresh fruit , thats about it. The north land was calling , Superior Rocks !

I'm not a Dutchman, not a fruit farmer either but I do fit nicely into West Michigan. The area I am in the costs across the board are lower than any other place I have been in the last 20 years.

Where are the nuke plants that are all over? I can't place where even one is off the top of my head.

Just looked, there are 3 total nuke plants with 4 reactors in Michigan. 1 in the Detroit area, and 2 down in the far Southwest corner in the South Haven/Benton Harbor area. Not exactly what I would call "everywhere".

Both Plants are in southwest Michigan, Bridgeman, and Palisades. They cover most of the geographical area , south to north.. I know its not GR , but would cover most all points south and west. , also covers the fruit belt, strawberries, peaches, plums, pickles, Blueberries ( Big time where I lived), Apples more south along with grapes.Other truck farming as well, in the area. In the snow belt, about 200 " per year , although it never got very cold in winter. seldom below 20. Some tourist area around South Haven , thats about it. Kalamazoo on the west- Grand Rapids on the North , Holland west, New Buffalo on the south. Thats the area. There are worse places in Mi. for sure, and , like I said , I WILL miss the fresh fruit...

Darstar - I'm moving to GR in a short while. Can you explain what things you found were most expensive? Clothes? Groceries? Fruits/Veggies? Office Supplies?

I currently live in metro Detroit and do not think anything is too expensive other than my gas heating bill in the winter.

Basically, where should I be warned NOT to shop?

thanks!

I don't think you will find anything less expensive than the Detroit area , these days, anywhere in South-middle Michigan.East or west. gas is the same all over, EXPENSIVE !.....taxes , maybe less , depends.
