I doubt that's true for the eastern Up around the Sault, it would be much quicker and easier to get to Detroit down the I-75 Rather than heading to MSP where you don't have a major interstate highway connection between the two cities.

Yes and no. There are some things that are unique to the region and more or less unique to Michigan. Nothing really stops or begins at State borders, so it is more a regional thing than local. The one thing I am aware of that may be unique to Michigan is that everyone seems to own property or a cabin "up north" which means north of Lansing/Saginaw. People from Michigan appear to be more inclined to vacation in Michigan (up north) than I have seen in other states. A few language issues, some foods (or at least the names for the food) and Euchre, but it is hard to say where those start and stop.

does having your own more insular world make you different? and, if so, how?
I drove through 7 states while on vacation not long ago and it did occur to me that Michganders are unique in their love of their State, or at least visibly advertise their pride on the back of their cars (with the myriad of Love Michigan stickers).

Sadly, we go to Green Bay (2+ hrs). But we fly out of Chicago (5+hrs). Minneapolis is 6hrs while Detroit is about 7.

We live on a peninsula of a peninsula .

Yoopers in general seem to be an isolated bunch. Both geographically and culturally. The cultural bit seem to hold true in most rural locations though. You don't meet many people who didn't grow up here.

Michigan may be more car dependent than the rest of the Midwest.
