I am one of those people with teaching degrees but no job in Northern Michigan. There is such a huge surplus of teachers here and no jobs. It seems like every year they close another school or two which sends more teachers looking for work. I have been a sub and coached a lot of sports and I still can't find anything.
I took a teaching job in Greenville SC but I had to call and withdraw from the job two weeks before school started because I did not sell my business in time. I figured I would give it one more chance here but I dont think a job will ever open for me here. Its sad because I really love it up here but unless you know someone good luck getting an interview.

Hope things work out for you it is very beautiful if you can make it work up here

To the two secondary teachers: What are your subject area qualifications?

Teaching positions are still very scarce. Good Luck! Traverse City is a very cool town and a very nice place.

I moved out of state to teach after 2 years of subbing. I have a friend who has subbed for 4 years and just got her first interview last month (out of 5 years of applying). Success in Michigan is being interviewed. Unless you know someone in a district, getting a job is very difficult- ESPECIALLY elementary. Out of the people I graduated college with that I kept in contact with (maybe 10-12 people), only one got a teaching position in Michigan- and her mother is a teacher at the same school. Everyone else moved away, gave up or is subbing.
I only know a couple of people looking in northern MI, but in south-eastern MI, even subbing is competitive. I did not get a long term subbing position in my 2 years of subbing. One elementary position can draw well over 1000 applicants. My step mom works for Flint schools and last year, they pink slipped everyone with less than 15 years in, and this year, she is afraid of how far they will go. She has 18 years in.
I don't like sounding negative, but I am very realistic and the reality is not pretty. Good luck.
