Ann Arbor would be much much closer than Royal Oak. Both are great cities, I'd pick Ann Arbor myself in your situation. Plymouth is nice, county style living close enough to most shopping, medical, etc one needs. Northville is nearby too but has become a little sketchy of late. Way too many rentals have destabilized the schools imho and crime is up all the time.
Probably better nightlife in RO than AA but AA being a major college town there is plenty to do all year long, so it's kind of a wash.
