About 10 years ago my son lost his license following a drunk driving conviction. For financial reasons he was NEVER able to pay the necessary costs of having his driving privileges reinstated, and opted to simply do without! (walk, pedal bike, ask for rides) As the years past, he's gradually realized how MUCH more convenient it would be to HAVE a license, and has begun the process of getting it back. He has been living with his mother and I for the last 6 or 7 years, serving as his mothers (State paid) caregiver, in exchange for room and board. My wife has been a quadriplegic for over 10 years now. In 2012 my son suffered a MAJOR heart attack, which destroyed a full THIRD of his heart, forcing him to have an internal defibulator implanted into his chest. Needless to say, he was forced to give up smoking and drinking, as well as completely change his diet! Nevertheless, given the need NOW to be able to drive both his mother, AND himself back and forth to numerous medical appointments, he see's the need NOW more than EVER, for a drivers license! The Secretary of State told him EXACTLY what he would need to do to accomplish this, and after paying off several fines (which he was unaware of) and a $2,000.00 Drivers Responsibility Fee (paid in full) he is NOW being told (which they never said up front) that he would have to schedule a HEARING (in Lansing) with the Drivers Review Board, to determine if his driving privileges SHOULD be restored!? I would have thought they may have shared that little bit of info BEFORE he forked out two grand for the Drivers Responsibility Fee...only to run the risk of the Board NOT approving him to drive ANYWAY...for WHATEVER reason!? If they do NOT approve him...can he get the two grand BACK? I wouldn't THINK so? He has been clean and sober now for a year and a half...HAS to be, given the current heart meds he's on, but ya never know WHAT a "Board" is gonna decide! Any advice?

Attend the hearing and wait for their decision. They probably want to know why he took so long to correct the situation and how has he been getting around without a license up to now. Suppose there is a possibility they could determine him to be medically unfit to operate a motor vehicle.

The fines and fees were not a guarantee of restoration, they were DUE because of previous violations of the law.
