Hey everyone,

How's the morning and after work commute from Southfield to Auburn Hills?

Google maps says it's about a half hour drive, of course, that is in the most perfect traffic conditions.

What would it normally take?

If you lived in Southfield, would you do the commute out there for work? If the salary was right?

Thanks!

30 minutes is right. You just take Telegraph up to Square Lake Connector and hop on 75. The lights are timed well on Telegraph/Square Lake and that stretch of 75 moves well. That's normal commuting distance for Metro Detroit.

It takes between 30 and 45 minutes depending what part of Southfield you are coming from (or going to).

It also depends on how you hit the lights on Telegraph and what time of day you are leaving.

Telegraph is packed during the morning/afternoon rush. Sometimes, you just hit every red light there is because traffic is jacked up. Sometimes, there are accidents and traffic is just stopped because people can't figure out how to get around the accident. That's just reality. It takes my husband about 45 minutes to get from Rochester Hills to Evergreen/10 mile. He tries to leave before 7 to miss the morning traffic. He tries to leave around 4 to miss the afternoon traffic.

Going the opposite way would be lighter in the morning, but you'd still get caught in the afternoon rush.

Traffic lightens up (a bit) after the 696 connector and once you get passed Maple/Quarton. (Going North or South).

The afternoon is just a mess. Especially if you are going to use Square Lake to Telegraph and the Michigan Left there. I hate that stretch in the afternoon. It gets packed and there's always the people from the far Left lane that can't be bothered to sit in the turn lanes like everyone else trying to squeeze in at the last minute. You really have to be patient through that stretch.

It really doesn't matter if the lights are timed well at that point. It's just packed and annoying because there's so many people trying to make that corner.

My husband does it because he loves his job and like you said, the salary is right. However, he hates the commute. Luckily, he's able to work from home every so often. However, it makes for some long days because inevitably he has to stay later than 4 or 4:30 for meetings.
