Hi everyone. I am formerly from Kalamazoo. Born and raised. My husband and I, along with our son, are looking to move back to there, or Portage next spring. But... we have an eviction on our record. But we are currently in the process of paying back what we owe ($800 and some change). We weren't bad tenants by no means. Quiet, and kept to ourselves. My husbands hours had gotten cut at his job, and we simply fell behind. We live in a tiny, tiny town in KY and there are no jobs here. Excuses, excuses, I know.

So I guess my question is: How hard is it to rent in the Zoo with an eviction? Other than that, neither one of us has a criminal record. My best friend works at a realtor in Portage, and she said that since we are still in a recession, lots of people have evictions. And are still able to rent.

Our plan is next spring, go up north and secure jobs, then move. My husband has great credentials and I plan on working and taking CNA training. The Kalamazoo Promise is a big plus for us if we decide on Kalamazoo rather than Portage. We will have plenty of money to pay the deposit, and a few months in advance. I'm not sure if Michigan has a law to where a landlord can only ask for a certain amount.

Please reassure me that there is hope!

Thank you.

You'll probably have better luck renting from an individual vs. a commercial property management company. That's the rule of thumb for just about anywhere. Look in the classified ads.

Or craigslist. One obviously must convince landlords of your current and future ability to pay.

Also, is subleasing a possibility? You can find them here also.
