Reminds me of the time, years ago, when I was a cashier at Kroger and a woman bought a live lobster to the tune of $26 with food stamps and then complained about how much of her food stamps were being used up because it was so expensive.

Simple: don't buy lobster.

Forgot to add, she also became angry when told that she could not buy a hula hoop for her child with food stamps.

Her partner in crime, right behind her, purchased 200 bucks worth of cigs and booze.

Cash, of course.

Yup, I went to college in the prime of the college student foodstamp scam and people thought you were a fool if you paid for your own groceries. I had a roommate who told me she spent an average of $200-250/month on weed and she would get $200/month in bridge card benefits. If you can afford your recreational drugs, you can pay for your groceries. It also bothered me how easily college students were getting so much welfare money and those who really needed the help in non-college areas were being denied.

I work at Target and one day I had a woman who tried to buy a bunch of candy with her bridge card and was denied and she threw the BIGGEST fit. For some reason though, people with bridge cards are allowed to buy energy drinks, which seems pretty ridiculous since energy drinks are overpriced and bad for you.

I'm all for giving a hand to someone who truly needs it...but for every dollar in benefits a recipient should be required to do a dollars worth of work. They could work for a number of nonprofit organizations, clean up trash in their neighborhoods, or simply plant flowers and help maintain local parks. Why should our cities look like trash when there are so many able-bodied people not doing anything? A work/volunteer requirement would also be the best way to eliminate virtually ALL of the fraud.

So are the rich. All of the social programs pale in comparison to the billions in corporate bailouts and tax breaks--even tax credits to billion-dollar corporations so they're RECEIVING money instead of paying to help sustain this country. Let's face it: we have a welfare mentality throughout this nation.

Have lots of kids? Get more tax deductions to the point that you're not even paying taxes, making others support your choice to have a large family.
Borrow lots of money? No problem. Secure it with your house and you can take a large tax deduction.
Don't want to pay your portion of the bill for schools? Assess 18 mils to businesses and other people.

The list could go on and on. We're always looking for someone else to pick up the tab, or we're favoring particular groups of people through the tax code. It's a welfare mentality through and through...so it's not exclusively poor people who are to blame.

I was being sarcastic. While I don't agree with "assistance", I just think its ridiculous to say that people with bridge cards are bankrupting our country. Blame the politicians, not the people. When money is handed out for free people take it. So yeah, agreed.

I think the 1% at the top encourages welfare....encourages everyone being dependent on THEM. Its up to people as individuals to detach and depend on themselves. Even middle class and 'wealthy' depend on 'them'. Exactly, we are all on welfare. They want it that way. There will eventually be no middle class so enjoy it while it lasts.

So grow your own food, compost your crap, buy a solar panel and stop giving "them" your money. The list can go on, but most people will argue how ridiculous it is to 'live like little house on the prairie'. They like being dependent, lazy, and consumer whores. What? Sacrifice sitting on my a** all day?? Why would anyone want to give up being a slave to someone else for freedom...when being a depressed, hate your job addicted robot is so much more appealing.

Just look at all the "red" states for proof of this.

I wouldn't have family or friends on food stamps.

Kind of hard to feel sorry for any who got taken advantage of in this -- it would have been their own greed that got them conned and also it's not as though they've worked hard for these free food cards.
