I'm not sure I would draw a conclusion from one company's (Atlas Van Lines) data. For example, United Van Lines claims Michigan is still an "outbound state" United Van Lines Migration Study | 2011 Migration Study | Moving I couldn't find current data for Mayflower, North American, or U-haul, nor for all the people who self-move, don't have anything left to move, have put all their junk in storage, etc.

Let's put it this way. Michigan clearly beats California on the net migration stats. Has that EVER been the case, since California reached statehood? Maybe after WW2 when lots of folks came up from The South. But besides that, this has to be the first time.

Of course, as much of a basket case as CA has become, this should not be a surprise.

I hate to say this, but I expect Michigan to continue to gain people . Michigan is now on the road to recovery, and people will be coming back. This state is too beautiful and too full of potential to lose people the way we have been, and if we keep getting these mild winters...look out!
