Last week we finally took our vaca in MI.

Our first night we stayed in South Haven... I understand what you mean about too many tourist. We drove down by the marina & left. We checked the area out starting at 11 AM. Drove to some fruit stands/Farmers Markets.
Next AM drove up the coast to Grand Haven... & Ludington. LOVED...LOVED LOVED HOF ice cream. It was GREAT !!! Checked out the antique store next to HOF.
Continued driving to Manistee...then to Sleeping Bear Dunes...Lake Leelanau & to Leland. Had lunch at the Bluebird Cafe & went to a shop that sold very nice sterling jewelry called Tampico. Bought a few pieces there...of course :-)))))))
Drove up to Northport point and on to Traverse City. Spent 2nd night in TC. Had lunch at Dons drive-in... we had cheeseburgers/fries & hubby had a chocolate shake. He loved all of it. "Talk about fat thick fries" WOW !!!
We went to Petoskey, checked out a few beaches. Drove thru Bay View & LOVED all the homes. Very old restored Victorian Gingerbread homes.
Also went to Cross Village and ate at the Legs Inn.
Then over the Mackinac Bridge.
We stayed 2 nights in "Paradise". Couldn't wait to get to Whitefish Point
I was in "ROCK WORLD HAPPINESS". Loved all the rocks.
I have the BEST Hubby in the world...but I already knew that. He carried "heavy duty" bags of rocks approx. 60-70 pounds from the beach... up the stairs to the parking lot. He made 15 trips doing this. He likes rocks, but not as much as I do. He also has RA. His hands, arms, shoulders are the most painful & he carried all those rocks. Tell me that man doesn't love me He's use to me after 30 years of marriage

We also took a trip to Criss Light House. Found many rocks there also.
Just the trip there thru the sand roads was an adventure. Having 4 wheel drive was a plus. Didn't think we would ever get there, but it was well worth it. Loved the lighthouse.

We drove West from Paradise a didn't stop at Pictured Rocks, we were running out of time. We headed west & went to Wisconsin. Bought cheese for family & friends. Stayed overnight in Madison & head South from there.

We plan to come back to MI very soon.
Especially a trip to Leland (more jewelry) and to Paradise to Whitefish Point (more rocks).
We also bought plenty of sweet cherries & apricots.

Just want to thank all the people on C-D who helped me with advice, directions & suggestions. All of you have made our trip to MI very smooth & enjoyable.

Can't wait to come back

Than you for leaving as much of your money as possible in Michigan. However you still owe us for the rocks. Those things are not free you know.

Thanks!!! I'm happy you guys enjoyed seeing our great state.

The best time to visit South Haven is in the fall, when it's not overrun with tourists and college kids.

Glad the trip went so well, and that the suspension of your vehicle didn't collapse under the weight of all those rocks. Thanks for coming to visit.
That Legs Inn is one crazy place, no?

So glad you enjoyed your visit! Come back soon!!! Try out the Lake Huron shoreline too
I am especially happy you liked Paradise and Whitefish point! I spent one summer taking campers to camp at Tahquamenon Falls State park (9times) and every trip we went up to whitefish point to watch the sunset and poke around the rocks on the beach...LOVE IT!!

Talking Fall or Spring...

First question...
Are their rocks on Lake Huron beaches ???
and secomd question...
When does Michigans Winter in the UP really start ?

Hubby & I can't do ice & cold, due to medical reasons.
Hubby wants to come back to MI. me too, mainly the UP this Fall.
We want to check out the leaves on your trees, also. When is your color peak of Fall ?

We could wait for the Spring...just not sure when we should come up there.

Any advice ???

Thanks

Yes there are rocks, but nothing like Lake Superior. Still....its a fantastic...beautiful part of the state. Winter in the U.P can begin in October...but I think late November early December is more the norm...but I'm no expert, so the ones who live there will tell you. I think Fall will be a bit early this year...maybe mid Oct.
