I lived in Mt. Pleasant for 5 years while attending CMU. Half of that time I had no car. There are plenty of apartments near campus. The Forum is cheap and run down, but a 10 minutes walk to campus. Appian way is in the same vicinity but they are 4 person apartments so you'd need roommates. There are many many other places that are within that distance and most are pretty good. You can absolutely live in Mt. P without a car, it just takes some getting used to. I am stuck in AZ right now with a car and would happily move back to Mt P without one. I would recommend getting a decent bike to get around and setting it up to carry a milk crate so you could get groceries. Its entirely doable despite what any skeptics on here say. As for airport, I'm sure that there is a taxi service that goes from Soaring Eagle Casino (which is one of the biggest in the U.S. outside of Vegas and Atlantic City) to Detroit and you could get a flight from Metro on out.

Good luck in your decision and go Chips

Default Thanks for the great info!

Glad I checked back on this thread. It's very helpful, in addition to getting the general idea that Mount Pleasant would work, to get this kind of detail on good areas to live, and transportation options. Thanks, everyone, for all the helpful information.

If money is tight, Mt. Pleasant is the place to go. If you have a roommate or two, low rent houses and apartments are all over the city. However, it may be difficult to be away from rowdy students and not have a car. The town is pretty much dominated by CMU students. Several apartments in town offer free buses to and from campus every 15 minutes on weekdays. Look for the ICTC transportation service when looking for a place.

You could easily live in Mt. Pleasant and just use a bike. Everything that you need is easily within biking distance, and you can probably get around faster with a bike once school starts every fall. I went to Central for grad school, and my wife and I used to dread the end of the summer when all the students would come back, as it would take "all day" to get down Mission from the campus to the Meijer. We actually miss Mt. Pleasant (as well as my $300 a month rent, which included all utilities, local phone, and cable!!!).
