We are relocating to the U.P. and I was wondering how does one "get to Canada" from there? You need a passport as I understand it. I've never been to Canada so I have no idea what part of Canada is close? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! Also, if you have any suggestions on cool places to visit...

You can cross over in Sault Sainte Marie. Go to the Secretary of State and and get an enhanced Michigan drivers license for $40. It allows you to cross the border.

Or if you live in the far western U.P. you can cut up through MN to get up to that part of Canada.

You'll see a LOT of Canadian license plates here as many Canadians cut through da U.P. to get from one end of Canada to the other.

I agree with Scolls about getting the enhanced Michigan drivers license.

You can get into Canada without a passport. It's getting back that's the issue.

Some border states issue special drivers' licenses or state IDs for an extra fee that serve the same function as a passport when re-entering the U.S. by land or water. Michigan is one of them. If you don't intend to travel to other nations, it will be a lot easier and cheaper to get an enhanced license than a passport.

Get the passport! See the world! it's good for ten years; an enhanced DL is only good for four, if memory serves. Passports also serve as great backup ID for travel on planes if you lose your license in your wallet, etc.

Get which ever you can afford at the time. They both will cost you about $10.00 per year of holding. If only planing on going to Canada I went with the drivers licence.

Your question isn't complete? Thanks! Also, if you have any suggestions on cool places to visit... In the UPPER or Canada?

I like just about every thing in both places. Have did the circle tour and loved the water falls in MN. Up to International Falls. some nice falls in Canada too along with pictagraphs along the lake shore cliffs in places.

A pass port is more versatile and if you ever fly into Canada you will need one. The enhanced drivers license is good only for driving into Canada and back.

Remember, kids will need a birth certificate too.
