I am a single guy in my late twenties and I am thinking about moving to West Michigan. I am originally from Traverse City. Can anyone please provide past experiences of living in each city and which city might be a better fit for a single guy in my age group?

Thanks in advance for the help.

PJ

Can't relate to being single, but make sure you check out the video and other info on this page about Holland: Holland Michigan

Holland will be a lot like Traverse City. Kalamazoo is more like Ann Arbor with a little Detroit thrown in with it.

Draw a line from Holland to Grand Rapids and you're looking at social conservative (i.e. Palin) headquarters for lower Michigan.
Kalamazoo is more laid-back liberal, larger, tolerant politically.
Depends on what you want...
Both get lake-effect snow in winter, just like TC.
Holland is Republican politically.
If you're into art/entertainment/singles life at all, choose Kzo.

Except Holland actually has a well-rounded, year-round economy, whereas TC is much more reliant on the tourist base. not entirely, but much more.

Again with the 1950s view of Holland/West michigan. Holland/Ottawa County went for Obama. Holland is one of the most diverse cities in Michigan. All of Ottawa County leans republican (all state reps, senators, etc.) but about 30% of the vote always goes to the democrat.

What's the 1950's reference...its off my radar.
Holland's a nice town but in no way liberal (just read the Sentinel). It went for Obama because of a large and growing hispanic worker class. That's why it's diverse.
Single Guy sounds like he wants some singles action with nightlife and more lifestyle options (unless I misinterpreted). Holland is conservative, family-oriented, more highly structured.

I'd definitely recommend Kalamazoo over Holland. Of course, I'm biased (see username). Both are nice towns, but Kazoo has a little more to do and it's less conservative and family-friendly than Holland / Ottawa County. Kalamazoo and Holland both have colleges, but Kzoo seems like more of a "college town." I know a lot of people from Holland / Zeeland / Grand Rapids living in Kalamazoo.
