Avoid Central Michigan, the snow piles up huge and they never plow the roads. Here in Bay City things don't generally get too bad. It can get a little dicey come February but the past few years haven't been to outrageous.

Blame the road commission. I live on the Saginaw-Shiawassee county line, and neither county plows the roads very often. Central Michigan gets a bit more snow than those further down (SE Mi) but not anything like the snowbelts north and west of here. The problem we have here is that the open country causes blowing and drifting. Ive seen roads blown over for DAYS before the road commission will bother. I have 4x4 so I dont care, but if you had a small car you would have a hard time around here. I see lots of them in the ditch every winter in blown over areas. (a ditch around here can swallow a car, they are 6 foot deep) The other thing that happens to them is they get buried in the drifts and block the road. The northern counties have better road commissions, and they clear the roads immediately. South east Michigan has better road commissions too and even though they dont get as much snow, roads are promtly cleaned even if only an inch falls. Here in the middle areas of the state the local farmers do a better job of cleaning roads than does our road crews.

Default lake effect snow

If you want to see lake effect snow, check out the radar maps now Wed 12-8!
This is typical - notice who gets it the worst - the SW counties.
