Hello, I also posted this in the IL forum, but I was hoping for some suggestions. My husband and I live in the South Chicago burbs with our new baby and are looking for a change of pace. We like where we live, but it's getting so congested- 3 Targets within 10 min. of our house- and there's not very much nature around us. Also, it's a bit frustrating when your neighborhood stores employ people that don't speak English. Can anyone recommend a nice small town (preferably within 3hrs of Chicago to stay close to family) where jobs and stores aren't TOO far away? We are just looking for a better life for our family. Thanks!!

I live in Twin Lakes, WI which is literally on the border of WI/IL. It's a small community built around two lakes. It only takes us an hour to reach downtown Chicago or Milwaukee. The cost of living is lower here - gas, housing, taxes, etc. The WI border communities are very quiet, plenty of open space but also some wonderful family neighborhoods. Schools are also good in this area. I'm not including Kenosha because I'm not very familiar with it - only speaking of the areas west of I94. Most of my neighbors are transplants from IL and still commute to Chicago for work. The lakes are great in the summer months. So why am I on the MI forum? My husband's job is moving to SE Michigan and we are deciding on an area to move to. Good luck with your decision.

Look at any of the small towns surrounding Kalamazoo, MI. There are a LOT of former Chicago residents who live in this area. Actually I know some folks who live south of Kalamazoo and commute to Chicago for their jobs. Many of the homes on area lakes are second homes to Chicago residents.

My parents live in Dowagiac Michigan, they really like it a lot there are farms, woods, creeks, deer, wild turkey, lots of lakes, and a nice community college. It is 90 miles from Chicago and a charming downtown. City of Dowagiac

Two cities I can think of for you, Houghton and Marquette. They're both in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Houghton is smaller and much more quaint, but a beautiful little city, and Marquette is bigger and more modern, while still not too big. Winters are snowy snowy snowy, and summers are great, not too hot and less humidity because both towns are near Lake Superior. Check them out!

Houghton and Marquette are also 9-10 hours from Chicago.

In Southwest Michigan, I would suggest Three Rivers, Dowagiac, Decatur and Paw Paw. All are nice, small towns near Kalamazoo. All of them are within 2-3 hours of Chicago.
