Hello,

I will move to South Florida in July to start my Engineering/Consulting career. I would like to know what areas you would recommend to live in both Broward and/or Miami-Dade.

Some relevant info:
*I am a recent Bachelor's/Master's degree graduate (I'm 24 years old, male, bilingual). So, I would like to live in an area that is safe, convenient (decent and doable commute to work, for example), and family/professional oriented, or full of young professionals.

*I will live alone... My budget will be flexible (perhaps a $900-1600/month rent range)... I will rent the first year, then I might invest! Maybe a condo/corporate/studio/1 br place would be good.

*Commute: It's fine. However, consulting requires lots of traveling (might be local or out-of-state). With that said, the only day that I might go to my office (Biscayne Blvd) is on Fridays or both Thursdays and Fridays. Other work days are at clients' locations (they vary).

*Some friends recommended the following areas: Weston, Cooper City, Pembroke Pines, Sunrise, Davie, Miramar, Kendall, Brickell, Miami Beach, Coral Gables... but most people recommend Broward County areas regarless of commuting.

Thanks in advance.

I would rent in south beach. The market is still coming down big time, so I wouldn't be in a hurry to buy a place. You're a young, single guy, I would live anywhere on Miami Beach, perferably South Beach.

I guess the big question is whether you prefer quiet, suburban areas or more lively areas with restaurants, shops, cafes within walking distance? All of the places you have named above are fine, but they are very different from each other. Your budget is fine to get you a nice one-bedroom apartment in any of those areas. Many people recommend Broward because generally, it's cheaper to live in neighborhoods where schools have a "good" reputation. Also, it feels more "American" in general, according to most on this forum. Being young and bilingual, however (we are the same age, so that describes me too), I would suggest Brickell or Miami Beach. Other nice areas to consider are Coral Gables, Coral Way/the Roads, and downtown South Miami. If you want to live on a golf course in a gated community, however, Broward is better for that.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. I would prefer more lively areas obviously... Although, I am fine with quiet areas too. I think safety and convenience (close to sport venues, restaurants, etc) are important to me. I heard a lot of young professionals live in Brickell, so that might be a good option.

I would really appreciate any feedback. If anyone in the forum happens to know any specific places (complexes, condos, etc) in the mentioned areas that I should consider or avoid, please let me know.

One of my best friends... also 24.... lives and works in Brickell. He used to live in the suburbs (Doral) and really likes being able to walk to the supermarket, a few bars, work.... and be less than 15 minutes from South Beach. You could get a nice 1 bedroom apartment with a view of the bay for $1300... that is what I would do if I were you

Most of those areas that your friends recommended are not very lively, they are rather very residential. I recommend Miami Beach, Brickell(it's expensive though) and maybe Coral Gables close to Miracle Mile.

Sorry I'm not familiar with the cool areas of Broward, but I know for sure they're not the ones your friends recommended.

Brickell my man...look no further if you want to live to close to everything. Try to stick to the North End of brickell so you can walk to restaurants, clubs, and bars. The southern end is a little more quiet but still close to stuff. You'd be 10 minutes from South Beach, 5 from Key Biscayne and close to the airport. It's a very central location and rents have gone down alot due to the inventory in unused condos. My .02, hope it helps!

Rents in Brickell have come down, but not as much as one may think. You will still be hard pressed to find a nice 1br for under $1300. Thing is Brickell Ave. floods with 1" of rain and you will still run into homeless if you walk to the supermarket/pharmacy.

South Beach is cool, but also check out North Beach (but stay south of ~73rd). I would rather commute across the Julia Tuttle causeway than the McArther. Parking is also much easier in NoBe than SoBe....though it *is* still Miami Beach...

If you really want to save money for that deposit, you can get a very nice 1br for under $1000 in SanSouci or Keystone Islands areas of North Miami.

Good luck!
