Well if you think about it, the reason for that is pretty obvious. Detroit is (was) the "motor city" - (former) car capital of the world. No place was more pro-car than Detroit and nobody (back then) ever drove an import there.

Great post! You have to wonder how the expressway authority and cabbies would react...I don't suppose they get a lot of business going up and down NW 27th Ave...

As much as I want to be able to take Metrorail to the airport in 3-4 years, I actually don't see the point of a "grand central station" in Miami. How many people will realistically be taking Trirail and Amtrack to the airport given their *extremely* limited schedules? What's wrong with a simple Metrorail station built into the existing parking structure!?!

To me a MIA people mover connection is exactly that--a people mover that goes to the airport not a Metrorail that goes to the airport. It's such a half-asked job and we'll slap ourselves when we realize we have to carry our BAGGAGE from one system to another

Let me just clarify a few things:

1. The MIA Tri-Rail Station is currently the 2nd-busiest Tri-Rail station after the Tri-Rail/Metrorail Transfer Station on 79th St. So who's going to use it? Apparently thousands do now, so it'll be more once it's improved with access to other modes of transit.

2. The MIA People Mover will go from the central station through the airport terminals and back, that's it.

3. Metrorail is being expanded from the Earlington Heights Station on the Airport Expressway to the new Central Station.

4. Amtrak is moving its Miami hub from the Tri-Rail/Metrorail Transfer Station to the central station.

5. The station is going to be extremely convenient for tourists, as everything is one place for them to find what's best for them, for airport employees, for travelers, as we can go from anywhere in South Florida and end up at the Central Station. It's a great civic project and it's something I think we will all be proud to say is ours, once it's completed.
