i am relocating to miami from las vegas with my 6 year old grandson. i am a RN and i also have taught nursing at Kaplan review and at the college level. I do not like high rise apartments. I would like a complex that is child oriented with a playground. I am going to find a job when i get there but i would like to obtain an apt before i get there. i am a new yorker but i have lived in las vegas the past 3 yeARS. i dont drive and want to be near mass transit. any suggestions would be appreciated. denise

Miami isn't really a great public transportation town. The best place to live without a car in Miami is South Beach, Brickell, Downtown Dadeland, The City of South Miami. Staying close to the Metrorail would be a good choice.

The transit system is not good in Miami, I just wouldn't recommend it.. it would make your life a lot more difficult and less enjoyable. This isnt NY, the metro rail and downtown metro mover will get your around but it would suck, i guess there are busses but it takes forever to get around. Do yourself a favor, save up and come with a car, if not my guess is youll be one of those people complaining about how much better NYC is than MIA

If you can't get a car you should just stay in NY.

I thought I answered this thread before, or maybe it was a different one.

If I recall, the OP physically can't drive.

I suggest living some place along Metrorail, south of the Overtown station. You'll have access to malls, restaurants, other shopping as well as UM and the hospitals off the Civic Center Metrorail station.

Why are you relocating? First of all if you don't know Spanish while living here and especially working as an RN will be tough because everyone speaks Spanish. Also the people here are very shady, I wouldnt advise you come here without a vehicle, it's so inconvienent to travel around on the transit/metromover (ive experienced it). I hope you see this before you officially move but yeah, I dont think this city would be a good match.

folks, thanks for the input. I have physical issues which is why i cant get my drivers license. I have lived in las vegas without a car by living close to my job so i think i can make it in miami. i am moving to miami to be closer to relatives in new york, i dont want to deal with new york winters.

You'll be fine, you simply have to adjust your lifestyle around the transportation options here.

Obviously don't move out to Doral and expect every day to be a walk in the park with regards to getting around.

I don't think this city will work for you... Public transportation in Miami is one of the worst and most of the year it rains and the heat is way too high to be walking outside or just waiting for the bus. Whatever decesion you take, good luck

One of the worst if you compare it to NY, but not to most of stripmall-highway suburban/rural America.
