I went to Calexico (or Mexicali- the one that is in Mexico) on a spontaneous road trip out of Las Vegas about five years ago. I was about 45 at the time. I met the bartender at lounge the Crown Plaza. She invited me to go dancing with a group when the lounge closed. She took me to the Rock- a night club- where were were searched by armed guards. Most of the group was hotel staff- about my son's age. We danced, did shots of tequila, had a ball. I only took 20 bucks and bought a round. When I ran out of money they bought my drinks.
Then that bar closed and a guy invited everyone to his house. It was so modest, so tiny and they didn't even have a seat on the toilet. But it was neat and tidy and I felt honored that he would include me in the invitation to his home. When the sun was coming up, the bar tender dropped me back off at the hotel.
Looking back, it was foolish of me to do. But I don't regret it. And even though we barely spoke each other's language, we talked about so many things- our families, the approaching Mexican presidential election, immigration, the job siutation... it was great!
In 1989 I lived in El Centro california. I spent alot of time in Calexico/Mexicali. I did like the area and had a good time. I also enjoyed northern Mexico and San Felipe. I would go back again. I couldn't believe the hunting. It was great. I guess it still is.
