Mercedes has a self driving platform called Drive Pilot. It allows a driver to NOT pay attention under the circumstances under which it can be used.
Nevada and California are the only places it's approved. Those states have now approved Turquoise Lights to be displayed when Drive Pilot is engaged, and the vehicle is driving.
It's purpose is to show other drivers that the "driver" is not doing something wrong.
I would have to assume this will be fairly commonplace going forward.
I think the idea is great, how it works out with that color is yet to be seen though. I do think the idea of notifying other drivers that a car is autonomous is a much needed feature in the future as more and more cars have this available.
It would need to be standard across all brands, not just Mercedes, otherwise most people won't even know what it means.
I'm sure it will be a standard going forward which is why this was originally posted in General Automotive and not Mercedes
