This is for a C class, but it may work for the E as well.

The smartkey, which was introduced in 97 or 98 has the remote feature... point the smartkey at the IR sensor in the driver or passenger door handle and hold lock to close or unlock to open.

If you have a smartkey and this is not working... you have to re-sync your windows and sunroof.

Windows: Roll all down then one by one roll up by holding the switch all the way down and continue to hold for 2 seconds after the window closes.

Sunroof: Slide roof all the way open... then close by pushing up on the roof switch (as if you are venting it) and continue to hold it in the up position for 2 seconds after the roof pops up fully.

You will now have auto up and down for all 4 windows and the remote open/close will work.
