Treatment is something to be determined by the individual and their physician. As far as causes, depends who you ask. There is a genetic component, but other suggestions have included allergies, environment, temporal lobe dysfunction, etc.. As someone who was diagnosed at age 33, i'd have to say the most important thing is that the individual learns how they learn. That is to say, individuals with ADD/ADHD can and do learn, just not in a traditional way. I realize opinions will vary regarding all this, and I am only speaking from my own experience. I sought treatment/testing out of frustration of a lifetime of education that produced little more than "D"'s. Once I chose my path of treatment and education of how I learn, I never again studied and completed my Master's degree with a 3.9 gpa.
