House Budget Includes $72.6 M for K

That airport by-pass is great for heading straight to Wal-Mart and Home Depot from upcountry.....lol

However, I'm thinking they are going to have to put in a traffic light at Puunene and dump-road...now that it's a 4-way, that crossing has become really hairy with poor visibility. I'm hoping the inevitable doesn't happen before that light is funded.

The budget got passed and the road is going to be built. Also, Kihei is getting a high school. It's pretty ridiculous it's taken this long for a high school to be built in Kihei.

You think? We wanted a high school since I was attending middle school there. We were like the 3rd class after Lokelani opened up.

I found this thread after looking for updates about the road, but I haven't been able to find anything. Since it is directly on topic, I decided to revive the discussion to see if anyone has recent information about the development of the road.

Coincidentally, a year to the day since your post and still no news.

Haven't seen anything new, saw some proposals on making new 2 lane roads, connecting some in between roads, but nothing on radar about connecting Kihei to Kula.

n/a State Kihei to Upcountry connector - Piilani
Highway to Haleakala Highway

Construct a new 2-lane collector roadway
between Piilani Highway at Kaonoulu Street
to Haleakala Highway at Haliimaile Road
$136,500,000

This is the only route they mention in anything long term.

Have not heard a word about the connector road to upcountry for a long time. Changing the Piilani hwy to 35 mph is the big 'road news' in Kihei right now, that and the big circle they are planning for the new high school - between the two our fast roadway is gone forever. S. Kihei Rd is already a parking lot, my guess is that it will somehow only get worse.

From an ecological standpoint, the road would cut down on the miles driven here by quite a few.

The winery to Wailea is more than an hour, as I recall, and would be shortened to about 10 minutes if the "Oprah Road" was opened to the public.

Maybe if we all ask Oprah nicely???

That and the 2 lane from the Wailea Fire Station to Monkeypod was recently discussed I believe.
