Are there any over the air broadcast TV stations in Maui? If so how is the signal?

Thanks

Just like cell phones, it all depends on your exact location relative to the closest antenna tower. You can have great reception in one spot, and 150 ft away be out of luck.

But here's a good guide to the stations broadcasting in Hawai'i... Hawaii Radio & Television Guide

Good luck!

I looked into digital broadcasting recently, and I seem to remember all the islands except Kauai have converted over to digital broadcasting. In fact, Wikipedia tells us Hawaii was the first state to convert to digital broadcasting--but Kauai only has low-power analog repeaters that they didn't bother to upgrade--so the island of Kauai will be one of the last in the country to have analog broadcasting.

List of television stations in Hawaii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But Maui does have plenty of local digital broadcasting.

Everywhere in the developed world has free TV stations. Are people so used to cable TV that they think broadcast TV is unusual?

I don't think it's a question of whether or not there is free TV broadcast, it's a matter of whether you can get a good signal. You're too young to remember, but cable TV began as Community Antenna TV, when people who didn't get good reception could get wired in to a large antenna on a high tower. Later non-broadcast channels were added, and eventually became the tail that wags the dog.

In Hawai'i the cable business has done very well, and has become seen as a necessity in many places, precisely because the topography can make reception so challenging.

Being from the Chicago area Growing up on the Southeast side when I was young we used Rabbit ears and then a hoop when UHF came on air, you had to readjust the antenna for every different station. When the then "Sears Tower" Willis now was under construction it blocked the signals from almost all of the broadcast stations since the antennas were either on the 40 story "Prudential" Building or at the WGN studios on north Halsted Street. With the old analog system if you had a poor signal you had Snow, ghosts, double pictures. With the new Digital signals a moderate signal will give you local dropouts (missing Pixels) but once it becomes about 10 % degraded it will totally be lost. I'm on a moderate hill andused to have a 75' tower to get the Chicago stations 70 Miles as crow flies to antenna. When Motorola put a factory across the street from us we lost that signal path for good. I rotated the antenna to point at rockford but the tower failed in a storm.

Again thanks for all the replies
