My boyfriend and I live on Catalina Island and are just sick and tired of the "LA vibe" going around ALL the time. We moved on an island to get an "Aloha vibe" and I now realize the only place to find it is in Hawaii itself! I've met many people from Maui who have told me Haiku is a nice place to live. My boyfriend is going to school to become an electrician and will be done in December... So planning on moving out there anytime after that. Does anyone know if he'll even be able to use his schooling in Maui? Especially in that area? We plan on just moving out there and trying to find jobs there... Well, if he could land an electrician job beforehand that would be great! Anyways if anyone has any kind of info or advice, I would greatly appreciate it... I need help painting a picture in my head! Mahalo and Aloha

haiku doesn't have a lot of businesses. mostly homes. you could live there no problem but work would more likely be other parts of maui. I would think too you would need to be accredited in maui to get any real work.

He would first need to be licensed through the state. Little to no chance of finding any real sustainable work when you have no experience and connections on the island. Most likely your husband would have to end up being some kind of handyman, taking whatever odd jobs, covering the whole island, come his way (i.e. hauling rubbish, installing a toilet, etc), but that's assuming he can be a jack of all trades which is what one needs to be when it comes to construction work in the isles.

As far as Haiku, it can be very wet and rainy. That means you pay the price with the extra bugs and centipedes that will inevitably enter your home.
