Both are visitor and tourist destinations. Which is better for a business depend on the business and the customers your gearing towards. Only a walk on foot will anser that question unless your wiling to say what type of business it is. A t shirt shop may do good at both locations but a transmission repair business will be out of place.

It would be 90% tourist, 10% local. Not a Target, or Longs or Grocery-store sort of crowd. Similar in some ways to Wyland whose studio is near Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

If you are looking to do an art studio, there's loads of them scattered about and not paying such high rents as the main tourist streets. Hawi has a few, Waimea has a few, Honokaa has more craft shops than art shops although those are going out of business, too. Hilo has a few but not as many per capita as it seems in some of the other areas. Volcano is a very art sort of village and the rent would be a lot less.

A big difficulty with doing anything with tourists here is they have only so many routes into our state and those routes change. For awhile we had a lot of cruise ships, now most of those have gone. Although the cruise ships would drop a lot of tourists off, it would be for a very short time in a fairly small area. For awhile we had several direct flights from the mainland to here and now most of them are rerouted through Honolulu where most of the folks then stay. As the cruise ship and airline routes change, so would the amount of tourists arriving which makes it difficult to figure out a viable business plan. The businesses which seem to do better in the long run cater to a higher percentage of local folks because the tourists come and go in varying amounts but the local folks are generally always here.
