Generally speaking the "north side" refers to the area falling north of Rt. 9. Based on your question, I am guessing you are looking at real estate listings and are seeing "north side" location etc. I grew up in Shrewsbury and never really understood the "north side" description commonly used in real estate ads. However, the northwest quadrant of Shrewsbury is considered the most desirable. This area would include the center of town and many of the neighborhoods off Prospect Street, Spring Street, Colonial Drive etc.
The so called "south side" has seen more development over the last few years and includes more upscale neighborhoods now. This area also benefits from closer proximity to the commuter T stations in both N. Grafton and Westborough. Don't worry about being in a "bad area" because there really isn't one. The area often considered less desirable was always the western part of town by Lake Quinsigamond and streets off Rt.9. However, this has also changed because waterfront property has become more desirable and the proximity to the Worcester hospitals has bumped up the desirability of the lake area. The ugliest area, in my opinion, is pretty much the entire stretch of Rt. 20....but even the streets off Rt. 20 are pretty decent...Rt. 20 itself in this area is just ugly.
The benefits of Shrewsbury include highly regarded schools, attractive and varied neighborhoods, new england character, proximity to Worcester and Boston. In general, the character of the town is new england suburban.
To answer your question...Main Street is considered north side.
We are considering moving to Shrewsbury and you answered my questions.
Thank you for the info.
