What about Plymouth?
My niece has autism spectrum whatever, -- she's over 20 now, born/raised/ schooled in Plymouth. She went to a place called Pilgrim Academy- a school for AS kids.

Plymouth is an hour'ish South of Boston, it's rural (IMHO), it has some historic crap, forests, lakes/ponds, land, beaches, all that stuff. They have some real good schools for neurotypical kids too, including a large trade school. A decent hospital nearby, it's on the sea, *commuter rail line, and a straight shot to Boston down rt3.

Rural is 10,000 in population or less. It's hard to argue that box stores make a place rural.

My husband is a software engineer and he makes waaay more here than in the DFW area. People here generally leave you alone and don’t get in your business. There are four seasons, drivers are more cautious, close to the ocean, mountains.. lots of trees. The only thing I miss is the food! But there are some ok alternatives

Thats a very sweet take on MA. BUT, folks only stay out of your business if they don't know you. Here, the grapevine runs STRONG for natives. If you were unfortunate enough to be born here, everyone will always know your business, sometimes even before you do!!

Really? Never heard this one, esp the population limit??
I always associated box stores with more rural places, esp the South and Midwest, where box stores are often the only place for folks to shop.

Yes, re: Northfield. It is part of the Pioneer Valley, at the very top (north), on the border with NH. It's a very beautiful small town; rural outside the town center. I don't know about the schools. But there are numerous other towns here in the Valley that have that type of beauty.
