Hello,

I'm wondering what everyone thinks of Acton, MA? It seems like it's getting more built up. I know the schools have a great reputation, but how is the vibe?

It's a bedroom community for the rich. What "vibe" are you looking for exactly?

Looks like Acton can still be 'affordable' and not just for the rich (see listing below). I'm not sure how bad the commute time are, if they suck the life out of you, it would not be worth the move
Luckily MA do have several large companies scattered in various suburbs so it can work for many

Example, an 'ok' single family for 500k. First time home owners could slowly DIY to save a little cash.

Nice, but not too snobby. It's not quite Lexington, so I thought it might be a nice alternative.

Property taxes are off the charts but I do like the feel of the town compared to a lot of other communities in metro west. There is a lot of tech workers in the town due to the proximity to porter square. I think they are more down to earth than the financial district types

Given a choice I would pick Burlington. Commuter rail, bus to alewife, more stores, and way Lower taxes

I do like Burlington, but I don't think the schools are nearly as good. Schools are very important to me.

They don't seem that high to me. The median tax bill in my town is around $12k. Mine's over $12k and it's not even $200k more expensive than that one. All towns in this area (West-NW of Boston) have super high tax rates because of higher per-pupil spending. It's no coincidence the best schools in the state are in the Rt-2/MassPike corridor.

For our taste, it was still too far. I wouldn't say proximity to Cambridge was optimal. To me, it's where you move if you can't afford someplace closer.

Acton seems like a very nice community, with a very good school system. For us, it was simply too far from the city. But if you don't care about going to the city, it seems like a fantastic choice.

It's more complicated than that. If you look at the list of towns with expenditure per pupil you'll see some of the lesser performing district spend almost as much or more than Acton with much worse results.

Much of the reason for high tax rates in places like Acton is lack of industrial or commercial activity to take the burden off of homeowners and extremely overcompensated public employees.
