Hello! I'm planning to go to Boston area for my birthday weekend which is in late June. Not sure yet of south shore or north shore. I was thinking maybe visit Salem. We went out there yesterday, and really liked the town itself too - very cute. We didn't go inside any of the sites, but just more walked around.

I was thinking of maybe going back out there for my birthday and spend a few days and actually visit sites. Even it wasn't the north shore and Salem, maybe visit the south shore and see Plymouth.

I looked on yelp to try to get some ideas - but it's better to get ideas from locals too from city-data.

Right now it doesn't matter if it's a waterfront dining restaurants on the north or south shore. Cape might be nice too - I've actually never been to the cape. More than likely I know it will be seafood, my hubby loves seafood. I'm not a big fan - but as long as they have a few good chicken choice selections, I'll be fine.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If you think Salem is cute, you'll love a stroll through downtown Newburyport. If you enjoy outdoor nature, go for a hike on Plum Island. I like Sandy Point which is at at the end of a ~5 mile long dirt road. Depending on when you're going, beware of the greenheads. They are nasty buggers.

I've eaten at a few cute places by the sea in Salem but I can't remember the names. Someone else will probably come along and fill you in.

If you want to venture as far north as Newburyport, you can eat at Not Your Average Joe's. Just over the bridge on Salisbury Beach is Seaglass, which is a white tablecloth type of place that sits out over the ocean. There are windows all around.

Oh man, they can do better than a mediocre chain restaurant.

There are some nice restaurants right on the water in the Seaport District section of Boston. There's Legal's Harborside and Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse both are restaurants that are "chains" but they're smaller, high end chains.

Couldn't agree more. We have a NYAJ here in Needham and while it's great for dinner with the family I wouldn't eat there if I was in MA on vacation.

Great suggestion. I think one advantage of eating in the Seaport district is the frequent boat activity, if that's you enjoy. Great views of the harbor from almost the entire lower level of that restaurant.

I definitely agree with Legal Harborside (there are a few places in that building, but Legal is the best). Strega Waterfront isn't bad either. Great views of Boston Harbor and decent food. . For views alone, Harborside Grill at the Hyatt Boston Harbor Hotel (Eastie, next to Logan Airport) is probably the best in town. The food is mediocre (at best) and overpriced. Service is spotty. However, for a drink and the view, it's hard to beat.

If you're going to head south of the city, I recommend either the Waterfront Grill or Black Whale in New Bedford (about an hour south of Boston). Both are waterfront and have excellent views of Massachusetts' biggest commercial fishing fleet. I prefer the Black Whale, but the Waterfront Grill has slightly better views of the boats and harbor.

I'd recommend getting to Newport, RI. On the way, stop in at the Red Dory in Tiverton, RI. Once of my favorite seafood places in New England. In Newport, try 22 Bowen (or find your own place on the water- there are plenty) and walk around the harborfront. A drink at Aquidneck Lobster Bar is also worth it. It really feels like you're eating and drinking in a lobster company wharf (well, because you are). Great atmosphere.

If views are your thing, there's always Top of the Hub but that's a city view and not so much a water view.

I like the Starboard Galley Restaurant in Newburport.

You can park at the public dock and walk there.

My favorite waterfront dining south shore and Cape:

Plymouth- East Bay Grille, fabulous food, great views and if the weather is nice, the outdoor bar and dining rivals anywhere I've ever been.

ON the Cape:

Pilot House- Sandwich- Sandwich Harbor and Canal views. Great food and again outdoor seating is divine.

Lobster Trap- Monument Beach. Best food on the Cape as far as I'm concerned. Back River views - very casual but a sometimes surprisingly sophisticated menu. They have a great Panko chicken dish and steak tips for the non fish eaters.

Flying Bridge-Falmouth or Tugboats Hyannis- both owned by Zammer. Each overlook the harbor in their respective towns. Good food but great but always good.

Casino Wharf Falmouth- lovely restaurant with a nice outside porch for dining. Menu is not as seafood heavy as others mentioned.

Baxter's Boathouse- a clam shack where you can dangle your feet over the side and drink a cocktail. Extremely casual but a cool (overpriced- but meh what isn't on the water?) fun spot.

Marshside in East Dennis- distant views of Sesuit Harbor. Great food in a gracious Nantucket shingle style building.

If you want to break the bank and head down Cape: The Wequassett Inn or Chatham Bars Inn in Harwich and Chatham respectively.

I'm sure others will chime in.

Happy Birthday!
