My house is too big for a single family (6 br, 3.5 baths) and i would like to convert to two family.

Any recommendation for contractors and process of doing this?

The house is in Quincy/Dorchester South Shore

Check with your building inspector. And your zoning requirements.

I agree with luvmyhoss, your first stop should be with your towns building inspector. It comes down to zoning, square foot percentages, frontage, and all kinds of other things.
If you do get the OK to proceed will you have a separate heating cooling source? You will need to separate the utilities if you plan on renting this out or you will be paying for the water and electricity.
Will your septic system be up to the task of 2 families or are you on town sewer?
You may also have to update egresses to meet code and possibly update the fire alarm system.

This is all possible, it just takes money but check with the building inspector first.

Zoning codes r going to tell u if it can be done quickly or longer (which means more cash spent to get the rezoning u want.)

Even if ur current place doesn't meet zoning requirements doesn't mean u can't make it happen. It means you will go through the board of appeals and need and attorney etc...Once u know where u stand; like not having the zoning and going through the boards a quick cost benefit analysis will tell u if it's worth it or not.

Also if u need rezoning and go that route check around for local lawyers that deal with those issues for builders in your area. Those r the people u wanna deal with especially in MA as it's often who u know. Good luck.
