I'd have to agree with 495neighbor on Lowell line being the preferable commuter rail option, regardless of where you live in Chelmsford. Even from the southern fringes of town, it's still quicker to drive back up to Lowell and the actual train ride itself is quicker from Lowell than it is from Acton because there are so few stops on the Lowell line.

I asked my husband he says if you mean up by Old Stage Road then he says the older neighbourhoods are really nice. It is not the area his family lived in but he says it reminds him a lot of it. They lived over by Robert's Field. If it is a new development then he says the houses are closer together then he would like. He also said leaving after say 6:15 to go towards the city can be pure hell. Lots of people brave it everyday though but I guess that's the problem!

I will say he once again said what a nice town it is. I know he would love to move back there. We go every year to their Fourth of July celebration. We don't go but my relatives always go the tree lighting on the common. If you jump right into town activities, which there are quite a few, you should feel at home sooner rather then later.

And since the OP is going to Alewife/ Arlington only twice a week, the commuter rail is a non issue. If they want to use it on weekends, which I recommend for family activities, they will easily find what works for them.
