Hi, We are relocating from Long Island to Boston. I feel like the South Shore is the right fit for us coming from LI's North Shore and this crazy need to be close to the water. That said we worry about commute. My husband will be commuting to either or both Financial District in Downtown and Dorchester Center. We are ok with the Hingham boat to the FD, but what is the drive like to Dorchester?? Is it really that bad? Which is worse 3 or 3a or are they both "little slices of hell" that I've read in other threads. Plus what time is the worst for the am and pm commutes?? Thank you!

The drive on 3A is slow moving, but it is moving. Some of it is coastal, which makes for a nicer ride than the highway; as such, I prefer it to rt 3, and I think to Dorchester, it particularly makes more sense since you get dumped right onto Neponset or Gallivan blvd which lead into Dot Center (sorta). The other option is taking the train to south station, from Cohasset, this is not a bad ride either.

You're looking at a solid but consistent hour to an hour and 15 to the FD via 3A and South Boston, probably the same to Dot, maybe less. When he's leaving the house will obviously make a big difference.

Thanks for the response! What if he left at 7am to go to exit 15 off of 3 in Dorchester? Still 1 hour 15 minutes? Is driving to Quincy and taking the T reasonable or ridiculous to even propose?

I'm originally from Long Island (Northport) and the area you're looking at reminds me of LI. I would look to live in Hingham fairly close to the commuter boat and route 3A (not route 3) and then you'd be set for both commutes. He could commute up 3A and never even have to get on the highway. I live in Weymouth which is just a tad closer to Boston along 3A and I drove in to my doctor at Brigham and Women's (past Dorchester) in under 45 minutes the other morning. This was leaving my house at 8:30, so it depends on the time in the morning that he'll be traveling.

Good luck!

Depends on the traffic once he gets closer to Dorchester, but I don't think it would be longer than that. I think if he's going to Dorchester he should just drive. It's probably the same or less time than taking the T, also minus the T fare and $7 a day parking charge.

Funny you say it looks like Long Island that's exactly why I want to live there! It's the age old question for us Garden City or Huntington/Northport area. Except that in this case it's Newton or Hingham/Cohasset! Thanks for the info!!

Def. Hingham/Cohasset. I would miss the water too much in Newton I worked in Newton for a while though, and liked it there much more than I thought I would.
