There are proposals afoot to introduce commercial shell fish (oyster) farming into our town.

From a financial standpoint the town has little to gain because the license fees are so miniscule. There wil be few if any jobs associated with these projects.

I have friends who live on or near the water in one of the suggested coves and they are all up in arms. They "anticipate" a substantial decrease in their property values. Their unfettered access to the water will be obstructed. Their view will be ruined.

I dont know if these arguments are real or imagined but what I cant get my head around is why the residents are being asked to give up access to any town waters when there is clearly no benefit to them or the town in general.

Has anyone out there faced a similar conundrum in their town? Has commercial shellfish farming been a good or a bad thing? Has it impacted home values? I would love to hear your thoughts
