This weekend a very rare event happened in Portland. Three thugs beat a guy to death in Monument Square. Violent crime is actually very low in Maine, but there is a rising rate of crime in many Maine towns and cities.

I think some kind of neighborhood policing is needed, or some kind of a model that puts cops on the streets more, and out of their cars in the downtown areas.

It is not just the cops problem, however. It is our problem.

If we want to continue to live here in peace we need to figure out real solutions to the rising crime problem.

If you post here, please no racism and if your solution is to shoot them all, we have already heard that now. Real solutions only, please.

Here is a website that will give you the crime rate in your town. Click in 75 miles and see which areas have the highest crime rates. It's mostly property crime, but the three worst are two places in Portland and one in Waterville city center.

if the national average is 49.6 crimes per squ mile (as it says) then we are well below,,,my town is 2

national average 49.6 my town 2 and im just outside of augusta not in an unorganised township

i've lived here for 18 years, never seen or heard of a crime in this town, i leave my doors unlocked at night, and keys in the cars, never had a problem (and im on a high traffic road)

yes, crime does happen in maine, but in my 45 years in maine, ive never seen a mugging, a car-jack, very very rarely an assault (thats usually in a bar)

I tried my town. No results. Zip Code. Cannot find "xxxxx".

I checked a few towns where I know a violent crime has happened in the last two years. Nothing. This website doesn't seem to be a reliable source for this part of Maine.

Check by county, MW.

The solution to crime prevention is threat assessment by potential victims and personal protection. I can be cameras, lighting. improved physical security such as locks and, yes, carrying a concealed weapon. It is not the police department's job to prevent crimes. It is their job to arrest the perp after the crime is committed. It is the citizen's job to prevent crime. Choose not be be a victim.

By the way; According to the FBI, Maine is the safest state.

Yeah, that site is questionable at best, and downright wrong for some places.

Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics!

I looked at a few places and the numbers are too low in a few towns on the Downeast coast area.

Eastport's crime rate is reported as being 1.16. Reminds me of that poster a couple of years ago talking about a serial killer in Eastport. His information wasn't reliable either.

In central Maine (and probably in the Portland area as well) they need to address the packs of kids roaming around playing "gansta."

It really doesn't matter what they call themselves, they are problematic and should be dealt with a little more seriously than they are.

That said, comparatively speaking, overall, Maine is quite safe.

That is a complete sentence...need anything more be said?

While the incident you refer to is both inexplicable & tragic, I don't believe this forum is the appropriate venue to discern the unfortunate origins & resolutions of socio-pathological issues. Just saying...
