Hey guys. My first post. Glad to join the forums.

I grew up in Indiana for 18 years, got in some trouble, decided to move to KY, lived there for 3 years, went to college for 1 of those years. Now I've been in TN for 2 years.

I think I'm ready to go back to school and just live somewhere "different" for awhile.

I've been thinking about Maine. Why? It it north, I like the cold weather they seem to have, but I noticed in research they don't have many storms, which I also like.

I don't like seafood either, and they tend to have lots of that.

I do LOVE hockey a lot, and the "main" thing for moving to "Maine" would be school.

I think I want to major in Kinesiology or at least minor in it, and I noticed that Maine U. has a program for it.

Anyone have anything to say about Maine U, it's prestige,

Would it look good on a resume? And what do I have to do to get IN-State tuition, cause I can't afford out of state.

thanks

Sound like your young and flying by the seat of your pants... Not necessarily a bad thing as long as you keep moving forward..

This is a great question when it comes to getting "in" sate tuition?? Something you are probably not aware of but its a point of contention that Maine has NO residency requirements when it comes to welfare.. we have droves of people coming here and collecting the same day but yet ....... But thats another "topic" !!

So I "think" if you lived here for one year that would probably suffice for residency requirements... I am totally going common sense here so who knows .. I could be worng..

But if that is the case then you might consider looking into some of Maine's community colleges where I beleive tuition is cheaper.. you could take some of those basic required courses that everyone needs for a year well you get your feet settled and then apply to Umaine for full time in state tuition yada yada..

Anyways whatever you do make a plan and stick to it.. a degree in anything is better then nothing..

good luck!

Wow thanks.

What about a place to live? I've heard that Bangor is a nice place.

I'm not a huge fan of being in the Ocean, or even seafood for that matter. I've also read that York co. is a good place.

I would like to think that we would get a apartment at first... how much are we looking at for a 1k sq. feet apartment, and are houses cheap there?

Just so much to look into for me. I would hate to move there, and not like it.

Thanks

Your young, Focus on where you will be going to school and then look at where to live.. I would suspect anywhere near a college should suffice.. bangor is a nice place from what I hear but I am not all the familiar with it.. I prefer Portland.. but like I said if I was going to school in farmington then thats where I would be...

Whether you like it or not look at it as an experience that you can grow from.. If you leave Maine with a degree it will all be worth it!

Bangor has a lower cost of living than most of York County. It is about 200 miles north. There is plenty to eat besides seafood and it costs less. Come up; Get a job; Save some money and go to school. Do you know what the job market is for kinesiologists? Our country graduates about 60,000 history majors each year and there are jobs for fewer than 600 historians. Portland is our biggest city. A check of the yellow pages shows no kinesiologists.

Kinesologists work in physical therapy, and stuff like that, I"m looking into going into a sport kinda field.

Like the Portland Pirates, they have a trainer, when a player gets hurt or even sick he's the one that deals with them.

if they are sore, or whatever the case may be.

I'm so afraid if I go up there I won't be able to get a good job, neither will my fiance.

I feel like it's a safe place and all, but I'm getting a lot of crossed signals with the expense of the place, and I've heard it's a socialist place, and the local government is really aggressive

i'd land a job first to support yourselves, (don't jump with both feet til you know where you will land)- then exercise your options,
maine is an overall friendly state

I'll be the first to complain about maine's big goverment... but mostly it has to do with social welfare and taxes....

but

You can carry a gun here if you want to..

our criminal laws are not overly aggresive compared to other places..

we don't have police officers stepping all over each other here

and mostly... despite maine's over taxation.. there is a real live let live mentality here... if your good people... you will be fine..

Work is another subject... best way around that is not to commit unless you have employment lined up.

Thanks a lot for your hints.

So work is hard there? I guess it might be everywhere now days.

Can I get an apartment for around 500-600 dollars there?

I'm paying almost 600 a month for a nice apartment here in TN now.

Just tired of this place.

Depends on where you are looking and what you are looking for??

but yes you can find an apartment for $600.00

Whatever your longterm plans there are always creative ways to accomplish what it is your looking to do..

working full time and going to school is tough.. have you considered trying to find employment with one of our illustrious universities??

I know people that work for them here and there and they treat you well.. you would also get some kind of a break on tuition.... maybe even housing??
