Wow, Elston, I didn't know this was an old wives tale or superstition. I always thought of it as a true guide for when to safely eat oysters! I was so stunned that I even googled it, and in just the few I checked, it was listed as an old wives tale. Well, huh! Thanks for setting me straight. I might even try some during a month with no "R" in it now...if I dare.

I've noticed that when the weather changes from warm and sunny to cool and damp, the spiders come in the house. Therefor, we are more apt to kill them. I think people have noticed that after killing spiders it soon rains, but I don't think this is the cause.

This applies to all Shellfish! ( mussels, crabs, clams, etc)
I have always been told this also, up and down the coast from Long Island to CT shore. The likelihood of red tide, and similar outbreaks, are higher in the months that do not end in the letter R.

this one is based in fact

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Poisoning - fish and shellfish
Quote:
Like Ciguatera poisoning, most shellfish poisonings occur in warmer waters. However, poisonings have occurred as far north as Alaska and frequently in New England. In addition, most shellfish poisonings occur during the summer months. You may have heard the saying “Never eat seafood in months that don’t have the letter R." This includes May through August. The number of poisonings also increases when there is a "red tide." Shellfish poisoning occurs in seafood with two shells such as clams, oysters, mussels, and sometimes scallops.

Never put a new calendar up before the first of the year or you will have bad luck for the entire new year. My great Aunt told me that one. She caught me putting up a calendar right after Christmas and threw a fit!

If you get a sudden chill, it supposed to mean someone's walking over your future grave.
