I've lived in Maine my whole life... and when I try to think of a specific genre of music you can link to Maine... there isn't one that pops into mind. It really depends on the generation (I think). For example I was raised by my Grandparents and all we listened to was country music. Now in my early 20's i'm into the pop and rock scene. Although I feel local bands are a big thing in Portland. Again it depends on your age group I think. A lot of the younger people seem to be big into the punk rock bands, which a lot of the Portland based bands are such.
On a side note... why are you coming to Maine of all places? Also why did you leave Arizona... I'm planning to move to Texas in September... any advice??

You wont find that country/rodeo/cowboy culture here that you find in Nevada nor will you find that country boy/farmer/good ol boy scene that you find in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Kansas. Country is here, but I cannot think of one country bar, except for the Texas Roadhouse, and that is a chain. Most people seem to listen to classic rock, rock, bluegrass and jam bands.

You can and we do listen to any gentre of music you care to. Especially with radios on the internet, Pandora and the like. It's not as if you can take a Mainer and pigion hole his a__ to any specific thing. Not like you can for states like Texas, Alabama, California, lower New York, for example. We're too ecclectic to pigion hole.

You could add Ohio to the list.. country gets the most pay down here with a little pop thrown in for good measure.

There's a country/ line-dancing club in Auburn that draws crowds from across the state. I think it's called, "Texas" and it's right on Route 4. There are a few bars even in the Old Port that have "country" nights. Many social clubs (lions, rotary, elks, vfw, etc) in towns throughout the state put on line dancing, square dancing, country events from time to time. Sometimes even on a monthly basis.

I do agree with you, though. While Maine's a rural state, even more so than many of the "country" states that do have the cowboy/farmer/ good ol boy scene, it doesn't exist in nearly the same fashion here. People who listen to and love country music here do just that... they listen to it and love it; they don't try to adhere to a real image of "country."

That doesn't mean that people don't live a "country" lifestyle, you just won't see them trying to copy the image of the stereotypical "cowboy." I have friends who are all about taking time off to go off-roading and live for "Country Gold Saturday Night" (which I attended once and still have recurring nightmares about. Not my scene) where they just go hang out in the ice fishing hut or maple sap house, drink budweiser and listen to "Country Gold" on the radio.
