There is an auction of a home in Calais coming up. It is an on line auction only and it closes at 9:50 AM Tuesday, February 10, 2009. The home is at 446 South St and is less than 1/4 mile from the super WalMart. Nice neighborhood and the deer are nibbling at the shrubbery in the front yard. It should be a real bargain.

Disclaimer: I have no business interest in this whatsoever. I just know that many people want to be in the Calais, Lubec, Eastport part of Maine. What a great home for a young Border Patrol agent with a family moving to Maine.

Ok I was looking at this auction site Thanks for the link NMLM! This is really fascinating. The prices some of these go for is unbelievable. I know it's AS-IS but still. Is this for real? What are these defaulted properties? Has anyone known a buyer or been a buyer?

We're not young, we don't have kids at home anymore, so we're a couple rather than a family, and we're US Customs, not Border Patrol Can we bid anyway?

You could walk to work at the Milltown crossing, and there will be a bunch of new openings with the new bridge maybe 2 miles from this house.

I don't think hubby will be at the Milltown bridge. That's strictly cargo, isn't it? He does passenger. He's filling a vacancy at the port of entry. That's why we're coming to Calais. I found the house on South Street on the auction site. No photos, but the asking price was $23,000!

The $23,000 is the starting bid. I read up a little bit about these auctions and it does seem that you can get some good deals. You'd have to do your research in advance because it's sold AS-IS. Also even if you're the highest bidder, and the auction closes, the seller can reject your offer. It does sound very promising though.

The description of AS IS usually means the place is in need of severe rehab, normally tearing down and rebuilding would be the actual thought of a buyer due to structual damage normally seen in the foundation.
