I hadn't had a nice butternut squash in about 9 months. I saw a big bin of them at a local market and picked one up. Not a big one but just enough for the two of us. I almost had a heart attack when I was told it was $5.00 for that one squash!! Two dollars...maybe but $5.00 for one squash??
Corn stayed high all August around here. It was $2.00 a dozen in New York when we were there in August but never fell below $5.00 a dozen around here.
A friend was at an local orchard the other day picking up a $9.00 bag of apples when a man came in from picking a bushel. They weighed the bushel and charged him $40.00 for a bushel of apples. He told them where they could stick their $40.00 worth of apples and left without the apples. My friend said the man was incensed as he had never paid more than $28.00 for a bushel of apples in his life!
Even the little farm stands around here are getting outrageous prices for tomatoes and other late season veggies. $1.00 a piece for plum tomatoes?? A sauce would cost you $50.00 to make at that price!

How are prices where you live??

On the way back here, we stopped at a roadside stand in Massachusettes and got two nice sized eggplants and two large green peppers for a total of $2.00.

We picked 6 five-gallon buckets of crab apples last week, did not cost me a dime.

Yesterday we drove up to our oat farmer, loaded 1 ton of oats [40 bags], they cost me $200.

According to the August 2008 statewide Organic Farmers' Market Price Report:
Blueberries are $3.50/qt
beets are .80/lb
Turnips are .80/lb
Cantaloupe are getting $1 to $1.25/lb
Strawberries are at $4/lb
green beans are getting $2.50 to $3.50/lb
Dry beans [yellow spot] $1.29/lb
sweet corn are getting $3.99 to $7.20/dozen
Tomatoes are getting $2 to $4/lb
Eggs are getting $4 to $4.50/dozen

Two weekends ago we bought a large quantity from a couple of farm stands. I don't know the exact prices of each item (DW picked out, I supplied the cash and filled up the pickup bed), but I'd have to say the prices were closer to msina's and corgis'. I paid about $200 and filled up the truck with tomatoes, peppers, squash of various kinds, beets, apples, pears, potatoes, onions...corn's gone by, pretty much...it took us a whole week to can and freeze this stuff. So I can tell you we got quite a lot for $200 - it'll last us most of the fall and winter.

early in the week I got corn off a stand here for $3 a doz. Saw the same place had it at $2 yesterday, but they had the stand gone today, so that must have been the tail end. I paid $4 up the road for a dozen.

Yeah, I had asked for a tonne months ago. So I felt rather obligated to buy from him at his price. I kind of wish that I had not, since I paid so much for it.

Now I have a source where I should be able to get it for a more regular price.

My next tonne will be cheaper.
