Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone knew how the market was for teachers in Maine. I live in Michigan where it is impossible to get a teaching job. I was hired in South Carolina but dont know if I am ready to move down south. I always thought that Maine seemed like a peaceful and beautiful state. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My wife just retired on June 30 from 44 years in education. Maine has a huge number of teachers retiring and the market is good for teachers. We don't pay as well as Connecticut, but it's a more peaceful environment in the classroom. Here's a link to openings:

NMLM is correct. The beginning teaching salaries in Maine are about 8-15K below other states. But, you can look forward in most places to smaller classes and a sense of community where you see the parents of your students almost on a daily basis. It is a great place to teach. In certain areas, they offer better fringe benefits than other states. There are jobs available in rural Maine right now.

Most teachers have summer jobs to supplement their relatively low salaries. My Father was a teacher for about 30 years and worked for the State in the summer inspecting Motels, Hotels, and summer camps for health violations.
He used to take me with him all around the State in the summer. I loved going to all the different towns and seeing the lakes and camps he inspected.
My brother who is also in education as a guidance counselor paints houses for extra income in the summer. You may find you'll need to get a summer job to make ends meet. The plus side is there are a lot of jobs available in Maine during the summer months! Maine would probably be a good fit for you. Much better than the South.
