Some kind of utility box. I have one by my house here in Colorado. I don't think it's specific to Maine.

Electric company can tell you. There’s one on another road not far from us. These things are not at every house, or every x houses. Must serve some purpose for the system instead of for just one customer.

And they are not a Maine thing, as BDL pointed out.

I believe this is a transformer to run the power underground. You can see the conduit running off the pole to a meter and then to the green box. It then travels underground to it's destination.

We have one of those right up the street too. I live in another state (Kentucky)

It looks like 7th Generation is right, it's a transformer.

I did a reverse image search on the photo and this is what I found...

Utility boxes are used for many things.

Our phone company has fiber running out so far, then using a utility box like in the OP is where the electronics are located to shift Comms signals from fiber to twisted copper wire pairs. From there the twisted copper wire pairs continue the signals for another ten miles down the road. That is what they market as DSL here. Maybe once a year a lightning strike will fry the electronics inside the utility box.

Yes, that’s what I heard it called. The thing is big!

It looks to big to be distributing or relaying anything that is coming of that meter pole.

I was wondering if it's some kind of a water pump.
Some kind of flood control?
