If a single person were willing to live in Old Town. I am aware of a pastry factory that is currently hiring [Minimum-Wage and a bit of a sweat shop], located 3/4 mile from a vacant apartment asking $500 a month [heat, electric, hot-water all included]. I am a real close friend of the owner.

Best wishes and I hope all goes well. i am sending some good Karma from Portland, OR.

I am not sure how bad the winter is in Eastport but I say go for it. I basically sold almost everything to move with my then boyfriend to Seattle. Not exactly the same but we lived paycheck to paycheck. It really taught me a lot. I was 25 at the time. If you know someone and can stay with them free or very low rent and hang on until spring things will get better.

OP, if your GF does not know winter and never has been out of FL, going to Eastport is gonna be quite a shock....and even moreso if she has been around a large city like Miami all of her life. She had better realize it will be like going to another continent.

I hope it all works out well!

I've lived in cold basements up in Boston without bathrooms and slept on cots. Will be way better off here where its warm and our state is virtually 100 percent reopened. My girlfriend has never even left Florida, she has no clue what winters are like.
Best of luck to you.

Eastport is pretty walkable, if you don't mind cold wind and the risk of falling on ice. It's been a mild winter so far.
I would not have moved here without already having a job, though, and it's pretty far out of the way if you don't have a car.
As others have said, you might be better off in a bigger population center! good luck whatever you decide.

Some others have offered good advice. The way I see it...your friend is willing to give you a place to live. That is a positive easily canceled out by winter and small town negatives. It was 10 (TEN) degrees overnight last night so in Maine in winter a warm place to stay is very important. Finding work in a small Maine town in winter is very challenging if not impossible. You are further limited by having no automobile. Shoveling snow isn't possible unless there is snow to shovel. So far this winter there has been very little snow, few snowstorms along the coast.

Imo (since it is winter) perhaps you would be better off financially as an employed person living temporarily in a tent rent free in a warm climate where you can walk or bike to your job or take public transportation. Let your girlfriend stay "home" and care for the cats while you work and save up some money. Do you have friends in FL that you could live with for awhile or put a tent on their property? Then buy a southern car that isn't plagued with a rusting body. I would highly recommend that the AC works for the wretched (imo) heat of the summer months.

You can look on the Maine CDC website but I'm pretty sure Maine still requires a 14-day quarantine for those arriving from many other states.

Wife and I plan on retiring to Eastport but we know that the likelihood of getting a job is very bleak. I was related to half the town when I was a kid and I do have experience with wrinkling from doing it so much with my great uncle back in the day.
